Bursary and Scholarship Programs

Bursary Program

Bursary Background

This bursary was established several years ago by a bequest to the Church from the estate of Miriam Lois Gibson. The bequest was designated to “Calvary United Church, London Bursary Fund, London Ontario”.

The bursary is administered by the Board of Trustees. In 2005, the Board approved new rules and regulations for the school year commencing September, 2005. Bursaries are awarded to eligible applicants who demonstrate financial need to pursue higher education.

Amount of Bursary

The maximum payout in any one calendar year is $4,000 for all recipients combined. Final awarding of the bursaries is at the discretion of the Selection Committee. In any given year, there may be limited payouts depending on the applications received.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicant must be a member of Calvary United Church or a member of its staff.

  • The bursary is awarded to students of a Canadian university or community college.

  • The applicant may be a full-time or part-time student.

  • Applicants must fill out the application form and submit it to the Church office by the end of April for the school year commencing September of that year.

Terms

  • Awarding of the bursary shall be at the discretion of the Selection Committee appointed by the Board of Trustees. The selection committee shall consist of a minimum of four members.

  • At the discretion of the Selection Committee there may be a year when no bursary is awarded.

  • Members of the Selection Committee and members of their immediate families are not eligible to receive a bursary.

Scholarship Program

Background

This scholarship was established in 2004 by a member of the congregation to support the recommendations of the Joint Needs and Assessment Committee. The rules and regulations have been developed to encourage teens to more actively participate in the life of our church.

The Scholarship program is supported by donations from members of the congregation as well as the Board of Trustees.

The Board of Trustees administers the Scholarship program including accounting for the funds, developing the rules and regulations and appointing the selection committee.

 Amount of Scholarship

 The current amount of each scholarship is $750.

 Eligibility Criteria             

 To receive a scholarship, the following criteria must be met:

  • Applicant must be a member of Calvary or his or her family must belong to Calvary

  • Applicant must be 21 or younger at date of application deadline

  • Scholarship is awarded for the first year of a post-secondary school education at an accredited Canadian college or university

  • Applicant must demonstrate personal involvement with Calvary

 Terms

  • The amount of each scholarship is $750.

  • Awarding of the scholarship shall be at the discretion of the Selection Committee appointed by the Board of Trustees. The selection committee shall consist of a minimum of four members.

  • At the discretion of the Selection Committee there may be a year when no scholarship is awarded or a year when more than one is awarded. The maximum number awarded in any given year is three.

  • Members of the Selection Committee and members of their immediate families are not eligible to receive a scholarship.

 Timing

  • Applications are to be submitted to the church office by April 30 for the upcoming school year commencing in September.

  • Applicants will be notified of the Selection Committee’s decision by the end of June.

  • A cheque for the scholarship will be mailed to the successful applicant’s home address by the end of the first week in September.
