November 2022: Food Waste

A NOVEMBER CHECKUP..... FOOD WASTE

DID YOU KNOW food makes up 45% of waste in London's landfills?

Most food could be EATEN, Redistributed, or Composted.

London's landfill is expected to reach capacity by 2024.

Top wasted food .... vegetables 30%

                                    Fruit 15%

                                    Leftovers 13%

                                    Baked Goods 9%

                                    Dairy/ Milk 7%

Food waste accounts for about 8% of all greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing food waste is crucial when addressing climate change.

How to REDUCE FOOD WASTE

Plan ahead. Buy from local sources. Don't overbuy. Share with others if you purchase in bulk.

Buy ugly produce (no need for stores to throw away). Eat leftovers (be creative). Store and label properly (freeze when possible). Best before date is not an expiration date! Compost when possible.

FOCUS on MINDFUL EATING

We need to listen to our bodies' cues. Enjoy our food but don't over consume. Throwing half away because we are full is wasteful and has become  a normal way of life. We need to do better.
