Calvary Compass – April 30, 2024 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

Rev. Dr. Graham Tipple, our Minister Emeritus, died on Friday evening, April 26th. Funeral will be held at Calvary UC on Saturday, May 4th at 11 am and reception to follow immediately following the service in the lower hall.

We give thanks to God for the years of ministry that Rev. Dr. Tipple had at Calvary, 1968 -1983. Graham has been reunited with his beloved wife Dorothy and daughter Kathy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with his son, Paul, daughter Diane (Scott) Sadler, son-in-law Tim Rayner, and grandchildren Chris (Michelle) Rayner, Nicole (Taylor) Rayner and Jenn (Cameron) Sadler.

Blessed are they that mourn, for they shall be comforted. Matthew 5: 4

This Sunday will be Red Dress Sunday (May 5th). Red Dress Day is a day to remember and honour missing and Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQQIA+ peoples (MMIWG2S+) from our nation and the world. Indigenous Peoples, allies and advocates across Canada and beyond embrace the symbolic red dress as a rally cry for awareness and action. Red Dress Day emerged as an annual event, bringing people together to honour the lives lost and demand justice for the victims and their families.

For worship service on Sunday May 5th, you are invited to wear something red to honour the lives lost and to stand against oppression and the injustices that are still taking place toward indigenous women and girls around the globe.

Worship Services are all live-streamed:

LONDON COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY

The Outreach Committee will collect non-perishables for the London Community Chaplaincy throughout the entire year, with exception of July and August. These items are shared between both locations - Southdale and Limberlost. They are dropped off at the Southdale location periodically as they have a larger storage area. Occasionally we provide updates/suggestions regarding items currently needed. Breakfast items, such as boxed cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter, juice boxes and nut free school snacks ( eg. granola bars and fruit cups) are some of the highest need items. As always, thanks for your continued support and generosity!

UNDIE SUNDAY

Thanks so much to those who have already responded to our Undie Sunday project. For those who are interested, the Men's Mission Services needs men's boxers, men's shoes and small sized toiletries. We have a greater buying power by pooling our resources. Cheques are made out to Calvary United Church or cash can be placed in the offering plate and will qualify for a tax receipt. Please remember to put Undie Sunday on the memo line of your cheque or on the envelope. We appreciate your consideration of this option.

FLOWERS AND DECORATING

Are you creative or like to decorate? We need someone who is willing to help with the flower arranging and decorating of the sanctuary.

These are what your responsibilities would be:

•           Prepare arrangement(s) for each Sunday service

•           Prepare funeral flowers following funerals for Sunday services and for smaller arrangements for shut-ins. (Julie Downes and Kathy Barton will help put them into small arrangements for Fran Menard to take to people.)

•           Set-up for flowers in memory of family members

•           Christmas - decorate the sanctuary and set up advent wreath and candles (CD members will also be available to help since it is done while the Christmas trees are being put up and decorated by them.)

•           Easter - decorate sanctuary, especially with live spring arrangements

•           Thanksgiving - decorate

•           Remembrance Day Sunday - prepare wreath

•           Other special occasions requiring flower arrangements such as special dinners or Anniversary Sunday lunch

Oh yes, be prepared to climb stairs and carry flower arrangements

Nancy Palmer just retired from doing this for the last 20 years. Thank you to her dedication..

Please let Mary Kannakko know if you are willing to help. (mkannakko@rogers.com)

Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 98: 4 - 9   King James Version and Translation

            Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all the earth;

            make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

            Sing unto the Lord with the harp;

            with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

            With trumpets and the sound of cornet make a joyful

            noise before the Lord, the King.

            Let the sea roar, and the fulness therein.

            Let the floods clap their hands; let the hills be joyful together

            Before the Lord; for he cometh to judge the earth;

            with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people equity.

 Prayer for the week:

God of words and actions, you light the fire of our hearts with your words

and fill our hearts and hands with your acts of compassion and justice.

May our words rise with the power of the Holy Spirit and our heartfelt deeds

continue to build communities of peace. love and hope for all.

In his name we pray. Amen.
