Calvary Compass – June 23, 2026 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca
Dear Friends of Calvary,
Thank you to Rev. Michelle Owens for leading our worship service last Sunday. Her puppet brings a fun dynamic for youth connection.
Rev. Kerry will be busy at the Bi-Regional United Church Meeting this weekend at the Best Western Hotel. Bill Butt will be conducting our worship service this Sunday.
Sunday School is finished until September. The children can access the printed material on the table at the back.
Please make sure that you fill out the Shared Ministry Survey by June 30th. There are copies at the back of the sanctuary and also a pdf attached to the Compass. You can also email the office with your responses to the questions.
The next edition of the Compass will be July 7th. There will be no edition on June 30th since Kim Knowles will be away. As mentioned in the previous Compass, this summer it will only be issued twice per month - July 7th and 28th and August 11th and 25th
Kim is away from Friday, June 25th - Monday, July 6th. Nancy Hind will check for messages and the mail while Kim is away. Thank you to Nancy for being doing this.
During the summer, the church office will be open from 9:00 am to 12:00 noon on Tuesdays to Thursdays. (closed on Mondays and Fridays)

SHARED MINISTRY SURVEY
The Southwest London Shared Ministry Churches: Riverside, Calvary, Wesley-Knox and White Oaks have surpassed the first anniversary of the Shared Ministry Initiative and the Coordinating Committee would like the congregations of the 4 churches to provide thoughts to help them move forward in this new model of ministry. Printed copies of the survey were made available in the sanctuary last Sunday and will continue to be available until the June 30th deadline.
For those who wish an online copy, a pdf is attached to this Compass. Please take a few minutes to complete either the printed survey or the attached survey so that the Coordinating Committee and Ministers have a better idea what direction you would like the Shared Ministry to go. Your comments will help all of us to continue to learn, grow and improve.
These completed surveys can be left on the offering plates or dropped off at the office.
You can also return your survey via email by writing your response beside the numbers (you don’t have to re-type the questions and all personal info will be removed)
1. your response

PLANNING SUMMER VACATION
As you plan your summer vacation or stay-cation, please also consider your church donations. The building does not go on vacation, and your support sustains our ministry year-round. You can give through Pre-Authorized Donations (PAR), post-dated cheques, or through CanadaHelps. Thank you for including Calvary in your summer plans.
VACATION HOUSE CHURCH
You are invited to attend the Vacation House Church, an experimental worship service similar to what the early followers of Jesus would have known. We meet Wednesdays during June and July at the former Fairmont United Church, 29 Tweedsmuir Avenue ( off Hale Street, south of Trafalgar). The service begins at 7:00 pm and is more participatory than you would normally experience on Sunday morning although we do pray, sing, read scripture, hear and reflect upon scripturally based message. An "Agape Meal" ( a communion service led by lay folk) is shared at each service. Come join us for this hour-long respite in the midst of your busy week, beginning June 3. For more information, contact Mary Dillon at (519) 878-7134 or mcdillon@rogetsto.com
BOOK REVIEW
Jean Ramer, a member of Calvary, has written two books. The first one you will be familiar with since its articles were published in the Old South News several years ago. The book has many interesting facts about Old South and the buildings and homes in it. Her second book is entitled, "Around the World with a spare pair of Jeans". The year is 1975, Jean takes us on her incredible journey from her home in England through Europe and then through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Nepal, Thailand and then finally Australia. Travel was different before the Iranian Revolution and the Soviet-Afghan War. Only a free spirit would venture such a journey on the Hippie Trail as it was known back then. There was no Wi-Fi, no easy access to cash machines, no GPS and of course no cell phones. As Jean points out, this is a snapshot into this part of the world during a fascinating era in its history. It is an eye-opening story of resilience, awe, and self-discovery. Thankfully Jean kept extensive diaries and was able to share her adventures with us.
You will enjoy this book. It is available at Tuckey's.
