RED DRESS DAY – MAY 5TH

Red Dress Day, on May 5th, also known as the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls, is an annual event observed in many parts of the world, particularly in Canada. Established to honour and remember the Indigenous women and girls who have been murdered or have gone missing, this day serves as a stark reminder of the systemic violence and discrimination they face.

The red dress symbolises the missing and murdered Indigenous women and the colour red was chosen as it is believed to be the only colour spirits can see. Hence, it is used as a call to the spirits of these women to return home. The day is marked by individuals and institutions displaying red dresses in public spaces, creating a visual reminder of the Indigenous women who are no longer present.

UNDIE SUNDAY

Kris Goodman is again collecting underwear items plus money donations for Undie Sunday Campaign. There is a laundry basket at the back of the sanctuary for any items that you bring in. You can also make money donations so Kris can do a big purchase at Giant Tiger. If you want to donate money, please use the church envelopes, put your name on the envelope and say that it is for Undie Sunday. These can be put onto the offering plates. Donations using the church envelopes will be tax receipted. The collection of underwear items and money campaign ends Sunday, May 17th.

SAVE THE DATE

The annual Blessing of the Fields for the Caradoc Growing Project of the Canadian Foodgrains Bank will be held on June 3rd at 7 pm. The service will be led by Rev. Tim Archibald of Oakridge Presbyterian Church. A short business meeting will follow on the McCracken Farm immediately after.

All are welcome and further information will follow later.

CALVARY'S PRAYER TEAM

We know prayer is essential, for ourselves and for those we care about. Calvary's Prayer Team prays for those who share with them their concerns, sorrows, joys and gratitude. Your requests are kept confidential and only shared with the prayer team, if that is your desire. Please contact Rev. Kerry with your prayer requests. Your requests may also be put in the Prayer Box on the credenza at the Ridout entrance to the sanctuary (anonymously, if desired) You are also invited to join the Prayer Team and if interested speak to Kerry or Kris Goodman about becoming a member of this important work for the congregation.

FOOD HANDLER'S COURSE

Some of the congregation from White Oaks United were wondering if anyone from Calvary would like to join with them to do the Food Handler's Course. The hope is that there will be at least 10 people for the session. When any meals are being prepared in our church's kitchen there is suppose to be at least one person who has a current certificate present in case a health inspector comes into the kitchen. If you are interested in getting re-certified or certifying, please let Marg LaRocque know. No date has been arranged yet.

The cost for the course is $70/person if there are less than 10 in the course. If there are 10 or more people, the cost is $30/person.

NON-PERISHABLES FOR LONDON COMMUNITY CHAPLAINCY

There is a need for breakfast items at the Chaplaincy, such as cold cereal, oatmeal, peanut butter and juice boxes. The food collected will be delivered periodically to LCC, Southdale location and will be shared with the Limberlost location as needed.

As always, the Outreach Committee is continually grateful for the generosity of Calvary's congregation. Thank you!

PSALM FOR THE WEEK

Psalm 5: 11-12 from the New Revised Standard Version updated Edition translation

But let all who take refuge in you rejoice;

    let them ever sing for joy.

Spread your protection over them,

    so that those who love your name may exult in you.

For you bless the righteous, O Lord;

    you cover them with favour as with a shield.

PRAYER FOR THE WEEK

O God of all creation,

as we give thanks for another day, let our ears hear and our hearts

be attentive to your call. You alone are our guide and caregiver,

lead us from all that puts us to shame when we don’t listen.

Enable us, always, to put our trust in you in all things.  Amen.

Prayer focus for the week:  For those who are caregivers.
