Calvary Compass – August 6, 2025 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca

Dear Friends of Calvary,

We are now into August. Hopefully this month will not be as hot and humid as July. It is always nice to have the windows open and not have air conditioning going all of the time.

The next editions of the Compass will be August 26th and September 9th. The weekly editions of the Compass will start on September 9th.

Kim Knowles will be on vacation the week of August 11th and will be back on August 19th. While she is away, Nancy Hind will be checking the messages and the mail.

Rev. Kerry is away for the UCC General Council 45 session in Calgary from August 5th to August 15th. If you need Emergency Pastoral Care, call the office and either Kim or Nancy will get in contact with the minister covering.

DAY CARE CENTRE

We are pleased to announce that the former nursery school space will become a Day Care Centre.  Please be assured that the church itself and all of the usual groups and activities will continue to operate and function as in the past.

Our new day care tenants took possession July 1st and will soon commence interior renovations. We anticipate that our parking lot and building will become extremely busy with workers this summer and with little ones arriving some time this fall or mid-winter to the day care.

At this time, we don't know what the day care's business name will be ( it's a new venture) nor do we know exactly when the day care will be operational. We DO know that the day care centre will be operating every weekday, and will include early morning drop-offs and late afternoon pick-up of children. Plus, they will be using our kitchen and fenced-in green space daily.  All of this will generate more activity around the building and in the parking lot than we are accustomed to.

We ask for your understanding and co-operation as we enter this new venture. We are excited to again welcome the sounds of little ones to our midst. If you have any questions, please direct them to Nancy Hind (nancyhind@rogers.com).

CHAMPION

The group will be meeting on Wednesday, August 6th from 1:00 - 3:30 pm. Future meetings are August 20th and September 3rd. We will start meeting weekly on September 3rd. Please remember to bring your water bottles.

PEACE IN PALESTINE BOOK GROUP

This coming Fall on Tuesday evenings from 7 - 8 on Zoom, Rev. Rob is offering a group study of the new book,  "Rooted in Faith and Justice". This is a 5-part study with readings from experts in Israel/Palestine relations. The book is available in Eform or print from many sources. You can order it from chalicepress.com ( $15.99 + taxes + US customs or from Chapters at $25.95 +taxes.)

Following the study, one of the editors and contributors, Dr. Peter Makari, will join and lead a discussion with the group and answer questions.

Further information will follow when closer to the Fall.

Calvary Catalyst

Submissions for the next Calvary Catalyst are due Tuesday, September 9th. Email your article and photos to the office at calvaryuc@execulink.com.

Meetings this Week:

•          CHAMPION - Wednesday - 1:00 -3:30 pm  (August 6th, 20th, September 3rd)

Bible Study

There is no bible study on August 7th and 14th. It will resume on August 21st.

Psalm for the Week:

Psalm 33: 20 -22 from the Common English Bible translation

We put our hope in the Lord.

He is our help and our shield.

            Our heart rejoices in God

because we trust his holy name.

Lord, let your faithful love surround us

                because we wait for you.

  Prayer for the Week:

            God our help,

Your steadfast love is sure when our lives and world

are uncertain. Shield our hearts from despair, cynicism

and being unwelcoming to others. Grant us gladness and

hope as we deepen our trust and commitment

to you in all ways and in always. Amen.

Prayer focus until the next Compass: For safe travel and relaxation during these summer days.
