Calvary Compass – May 21, 2025 - Calvary United Church, www.calvaryuc.ca
Dear Friends of Calvary,
We hope that you had a good long weekend and were able to get outside even though it was cooler and windy at times. We enjoyed having Rev. Dr. Rob Apgar-Taylor last Sunday for our worship service. Rev. Kerry will be preaching this coming Sunday.
There are a lot of items in the Compass about upcoming events at Calvary.

BABY SHOWER FOR OUR MUSIC DIRECTOR DENISE JUNG
We have a date! The choir are hosting a Baby Shower for Denise Jung on Sunday, June 8th following our Worship Service. All who wish to come are invited. You are welcome to contribute to a group gift (place it in an envelope marked “Denise’s gift” on the offering plate), or give your own gift, or attend and bring your best wishes! If you are interested in bringing cookies or squares, contact Kim in the office. Denise and her husband Peter welcomed baby Isla on March 20th.
CALVARY GREEN
Our "free" mulch will be arriving this Friday, May 23rd starting at around noon. Three loads will be dropped off on tarps over several hours. Two loads on Ridout and one on Garfield. We REALLY need help spreading. Rakes are available here at the church or bring your own. We also have several wheelbarrows for transporting.
If you have a spare hour or 2 that would be great! Assuming we won't get it all done any time you can spare in the next few days, please work on your own time frame. We will be covering tarps at some point, so please re-cover after use.
Hope to see many of you there.
SCOUTS’ BOTTLE DRIVE
The Scouting Group is having a bottle drive this Saturday, May 24th. If you have bottles or cans that need returning to the Beer Store, please drop them off at the church parking lot and they will be returned by the Scouters. This is one of their fundraisers.

THEATRE CAMP AT METROPOLITAN
This July, Metropolitan United Church will be playing host to an exciting Theatre Camp, which is being offered for young thespians between the ages of 8 - 18. This all-day camp is a chance to work on a Broadway Musical or Play from the ground up. During the camp, participants will spend the week rehearsing, working on sets and costumes and preparing for a full performance which will take place on Friday evening. The dates for the camps are:
July 21 - 25 (9AM to 5PM)
July 28 - August 1 ( 9AM to 5PM)
The sanctuary at Metropolitan is uniquely positioned to mount theatrical performances, as the church is equipped with full sound, theatrical lighting and a convertible stage. Unique opportunities exist for students who are interested in sound, lighting and set production.
The cost for the week is $300.
Please email Gregg Redner at music.at.met@gmail.com for additional information.
ODD BUNCH
In a recent article in the Toronto Globe and Mail, a reporter wrote about a new initiative regarding having "misfit vegetables" delivered to your home. They are referred to as "misfit" since the grocery stores and distributors reject them, but they are quite fine for usage and eating. One of the companies involved in this project is a London, Ontario based company called "Odd Bunch" The cost for a box is cheaper than the cost from a grocery store.
Kathie Leigh has been doing this with Odd Bunch for a few months with great success.
"Want to keep good quality food from landfills and save money on your grocery bills? See the news item, published by the Globe and Mail recently posted on the bulletin board by the parking lot door. A win-win situation for the environment and our finances."
You can also email at: help@oddbunch.ca or google Odd Bunch for more details.

Psalm for the Week:
Psalm 133: 3 -5 from the King James Translation
Let the people praise thee, O God; let all people praise thee.
O Let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the
people righteously, and govern the nations upon the earth.
Let the people praise thee. O God; let all the people praise thee.
Prayer for the Week:
God of wisdom and truth;
give us voice to sing your song of creation.
Grant us the power to announce the wonders of your world.
Grant us joy without ceasing as we are witnesses to the marvelous
ways your love continues to be in our lives. In Jesus' name we pray. Amen.
Prayer focus for this week: The unhoused and those that work to support those that are unhoused.
